Haraklion Port

The port of Heraklion was built by the Venetians in the 16th century and is dominated by the presence of the Venetian fortress of Koule. This building, also known as Castello a Mare, was built to defend the city’s harbour from enemy attacks.
 
It was from the port of Heraklion that Pietro Querini left: “on 25 April, I left Crete to embark on that voyage that would prove to be terrible and full of misfortunes.
